Organizational Alliances

Pediatric Nursing Alliance

The Pediatric Nursing Certification Board (PNCB) hosted the first annual Invitational Forum for Pediatric Nursing: Strengthening Our Future on November 11 and 12, 2009, in Reston, Virginia.
This historic event brought together nursing organizations caring for children to address issues of national importance that impact quality care of children and their families.

Nursing leaders representing all aspects of pediatric nursing practice came together to identify key issues facing pediatric healthcare and identify strategies to improve the health and well-being of children and their families. APHON President Deb Echtenkamp, MSN RN CPON®, was invited to represent APHON at the summit and served on the panel discussion about education and national curriculum standards for all nurse graduates. Nancy Dickenson-Hazard, renowned international nursing leader, facilitated this discussion among the best minds in pediatric nursing to explore topics such as pediatric nursing education, the nursing workforce and access to quality care.

Five broad issues were identified as important to the future of pediatric healthcare in which pediatric nursing could make significant contributions.

Access—Use schools as the point of access to health care. Ensure providers have knowledge and expertise in caring for children and families.
Education—Focus on lifelong learning. National curriculum standards that include comprehensive pediatric nursing content must be developed and required by all undergraduate programs. Ensure all nurses graduate with a basic level of knowledge and competence in caring for children and families.
Care Coordination—Within pediatric healthcare, define the concepts of healthcare at home and care coordination. Provide a united pediatric focus and voice on initiatives. Use nursing organizations to develop a registry of pediatric experts.
Advocacy—Ensure a pediatric nurse is present wherever children or children’s advocacy groups are engaged. Nurses work in concert with parent advocacy groups.
Quality, Safety, and Evidence-Based Practice—Focus on wellness and provision of expert pediatric care wherever the child is seen. Safe care requires that everyone knows how to care for the patient. Discuss a national research and evidence-based practice agenda.
