APHON strongly supports the National Alliance for the Primary Prevention of Sharps Injuries (NAPPSI) and is a NAPPSI corporate member.

NAPPSI’s mission is to advance medical sharps-
injury protection in the healthcare environment through vigorous promotion of Primary Prevention technologies and practices. Primary Prevention of sharps injuries is a technology or practice that reduces or eliminates the need to introduce a sharp implement into the healthcare workplace (e.g., securement device instead of suture needle for catheter securement).

Among NAPPSI initiatives are its Needlestick Safety Device List and its "Notification to Clinicians on Sharps Injury Protection," empha-sizing the value of primary and secondary prevention. Both are available at www.NAPPSI.org.

NAPPSI also operates a national speaker’s bureau. Speakers are available for local chapter meetings. These presentations educate clinicians on primary prevention technologies; provide updates on regulatory and legislative issues; and apply the concepts via a case-study analysis. The organization offers free Individual Membership to all APHON members. Individual members receive the monthly NAPPSI e-newsletter with regular updates on legislative, regulatory and technological changes concerning sharps injury prevention.
