To ensure that providers stay current in their knowledge of safe chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, APHON requires approved Providers to renew their status every two years. This is an important part of the Provider Program so that all Providers keep pace with the ever changing advancement in medicine and technology. The cost to renew is $35.

This online program asks participants to read updated administration material, take a post-test, and complete an evaluation. (You will be allowed to retake the post-test only one time if you fail on the first try.)

Content of the program:

  • A review safe handling practices for antineoplastic and biotherapeutic agents.
  • Identification of new antiemetic agents used in pediatric oncology.
  • Discussion of complementary therapies that may prevent nausea and vomiting in children.
  • A description of special considerations and nursing interventions when biotherapeutic agents are being administered to children.
  • Listing of common side effects for chemotherapeutic agents recently approved for use in children and the nursing interventions during their administration.
  • Identification of administration techniques when using an Ommaya reservoir.
  • Discussion of safety recommendations for the administration of vincristine.
  • Description of updates in the management of extravasation.

APHON will try to contact providers in advance of the renewal deadlines, but providers are responsible for maintaining their own status. Providers are not eligible to renew nor will they be able to access the post-test until approximately 6 weeks prior to their expiration date.

Those who successfully complete the post-test will receive 2.0 nursing contact hours.

The Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
