I have received a request from a chapter to ask how other chapters are increasing their member participation and ways to interest members in joining the leadership ranks of their chapter. Please share, because I am sure there are several chapters who would appreciate this info.

    • Ideas to increase membership:
      • Encourage non-RN members to be associate members of your local chapter. This may include: social work, nutrition, research assistants, nursing assistants, etc.  Encourage guests to become full members in your chapter. Consider advertising your local chapter activities at area nursing schools, home care companies, hospice agencies, and local physician’s offices.

  • Ideas to recruit new board members:
    • Identify members with leadership talents
    • Personally approach members, and ask them to get involved
    • May ask new members to participate in sub-committees with intent to mentor them into a committee chair positions
    • Offer to help financially pay for a local or national membership if you have trouble recruiting

Looks like some of my message was cut short. Additional ideas include:

    • Encourage current members to bring a guest to an event.
    • Identify how the benefits of the local chapter meet the motivational needs for present and potential members.
    • Survey members to identify the benefits (networking, professional development, fun, education, etc) of the local chapter, and rank the relative importance.
    • Survey members to identify their motivational needs and interests.
    • Approach new hires and suggest their involvement in a professional organization. Have someone who is active in APHON talk to them about the benefits.
    • Hold an open meeting for interested individuals to check out the chapter.

We have 5 scheduled meetings a year.
We charge $25 annual dues for APHON members
$10 a meeting for non APHON.
We have an educational offering for 1 hour and give a CEU an of course have  dinner at every meeting.
We know how nurses love their food!

Our nurses @ APH can use professional organization membership for clinical ladder.

One way to gain an interest in chapter leadership is to have them partner with a seasoned chapter leader on a project.  Start off with easy accomplishments—partner together on a community service project (select a site to donate canned goods, find out the top 5 items & ask members to bring those to the next meeting)  or a fundraiser (design and sell t-shirts or someother nurse-friendly product) or a celebration (Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurse’s Day—plan recognition for the chapter members or Certified Nurse’s Day—plan recognition for those members who are CPON/CPHON).  Have a new member assist in structuring an education meeting–finding a speaker, sponsor, planning the menu, obtaining CEs, creating the flyer that goes out to members.  This type of exposure provides the realization that together, the work is not overwhelming and that things can be accomplished through team work/mentoring.  Assess their interest in chapter leadership & increase their exposure to activities within their area of interest.

Another thing to consider is sharing the formal titles.  Several chapters have co-presidents & that is okay.  Share the work/wealth.

Also, as a chapter, provide an incentive to chapter leaders.  If the chapter has enough funds, provide the registration fee for national conference for one of the chapter members.  Or part of the registration fee.  Or APHON bucks.  Or exempt the officers from paying local chapter dues.  Add in a “dangling carrot” if needed.

Leadership in your professional organization is a great way to attract the attention of your employer.  You are representing your institution within your local chapter & members should be encouraged to include elements such as professional organization membership and leadership in their performance reviews.  Plus, it looks great on your resume/CV!

Eager to hear what others have done to develop the future leaders of your chapter!  Please chime in!
