I was wondering if any other institutions who use mediports manufactored by Angiodynamics (specifically the smartport 5, 6.6 french) have issues with the catheter “disolving” and breaking apart.  We recently have had 5 patients ( diagnosis of ALL, lymphoma) all under 5 years of age when at the end of therapy when the surgeon is going to take out (catheter duration  between 26 to 35 month) the catheter actually just falling apart, as our surgeon said “disolving and breaking apart” as they are trying to remove them.

We have just started placing these in our sickle cell patients for exchange transfusions.  I would be interested to know if this is a common occurrence as well.
