Fellow APNs, I need your help!

If you do LP/ITC and bone marrow testing at your institution, please tell me how many of each a novice APN must perform under supervision before he/she is privileged/credentialed to do independently. If there is not a set number, but up to the trainer and the new APN, let me know that too.

If you have and orientation documents specific to these procedures, I would love to see them.

Thanks, in advance, for any help that you can give!

    Holly,
Our credentials committee requires 10 documented supervised procedures before they will credential us for procedures.  We then need to do 10 a year to keep “competent”.  I don’t have any orientation documents specific to the procedures.  We just have them keep a list that is signed off by the preceptor and submitted to the credentialling committee.

    Vicki

In our institution, the novice observes 5 procedures, then 5 procedures are done under supervision. This includes LP/IT chemotherapy; bone marrow aspirate and bone marrow biopsy. Then, when privileges are completed, the documentation of the procedures are shared with our administrative office.

At this time we do not have specific documents specific to these procedures.

See one, do three well with supervision, then okay to be credentialed.

Record is on paper, patient name, MRN, type of procedure, comments and signature of supervising provider. We do LP, IT chemo, bone marrow aspirate and biopsy.  I think we need 10 per year to keep credentialed.

Personally I think 5-10 with supervision for a new NP would be wise…More up front support for improved skill and more longer lasting confidence.
