We are looking at our labs draws and attempting to align with respected resources regarding blood draws from existing peripheral IV’s. I have some information from Intravenous Nurse Society and am looking for additional sources of information. Can you please share with me your resources, as well as respond to the following questions? thanks in advance, I will share my findings if anyone else is interested.
    1. Does your institution draw blood from an existing peripheral IV for Labs?
What labs do you draw/are there any labs you will not draw from a peripheral?
    2. How much blood do you discard, prior to drawing the labs (some references suggest 5-1- cc’s) ?
    3. Do you have a policy/procedure for peripheral lab draws and would you please share it with us?
    4. What issues have you had such as: developing policy, lines not stable, results off? How did you overcome these issues?
    5. Do you have any words of wisdom, cautionary tales or tips to share?
    6. If you are doing POCT testing, what equipment are you using, for instance we use the GEM 5000.
