We often have difficulty obtaining Stimate from “regular” pharmacies, so much so that we really don’t do that anymore.  We usually will order it from the home infusion pharmacy the patient’s insurance endorses (i.e., Walgreen’s Infusion Services, etc).  As far as Amicar is concerned, we can usually get that from a regular outpatient pharmacy, but it will often have to be ordered and takes several days to come in.  For that reason, we will usually give a large supply (depending on the frequency at which we think they will need it) and warn families that they will need to give about a week’s notice to their pharmacy when refills are needed.  All that to say – yes, us, too.  Hope that some of this is helpful to you.

Subject: Difficulty obtaining Stimate & Amicar

I practice in Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, and have been getting calls from patients recently about problems obtaining prescribed medications from local pharmacies.  Most of the families have Medicaid (traditional and HMO) but a few of them have private insurance. Apparently the reimbursement from each of these 3rd party payors for Stimate & Amicar is not enough to cover their cost of purchasing the drug so many local pharmacies have chosen to simply not keep this drug in stock or not order it at all. We have alwyas had difficulty obtaining these drugs from the big-box pharmacies so we have always relied on the independently owned  pharmacies in town. Right now there is only one pharmacy in town that will dispense Stimate and even then, not for every patient, depending on their insurance. The closest pharmacy that will dispense the Stimate for some families is about 45-60 minutes away. The Amicar can be obtained but only at 2 pharmacies in town.
Is anyone else having this problem? If so, how are you handling it?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
