Subject: Flushing through Hep lock vs “wasting” heparin

We are currently transitioning our program to a hospital that has never previously housed pedi heme/onc.  Fun fun fun!

The non heme/onc nurses there currently withdraw and waste the heparin from a hep-locked CVL prior to flushing it with saline due to a concern of anticoagulating the patients over time.

This is not currently our practice at all.  We flush the small amount of heparin through the line with our initial saline flush mixed with blood return to check placement.  My concern with wasting the heparin prior to flushing is the additional line entry to the process.

Is anyone out there wasting their heparin?
