We allowed a patient who was an avid bike rider to bring his bike and stand in with him so he could use it as a stationary bike. I believe he was 26 years old and the stipulations were that he couldn’t bike if he was alone in the room (mom or girlfriend had to be awake at his bedside) and he could not bike if he had recently taken Ativan, Benadryl or a narcotic. We were also super cautious with the way his tubing was hanging so it didn’t get wrapped up in the wheels.

We have a teenager that will be getting a SCT in the next few days; parents are asking if they could purchase a foldable treadmill to keep in the room during his stay for exercise as he likes walking the best. This was the one they want to order. Just wondering if your units allow this and did anyone from your hospital have to approve? (i.e. safety or risk management)?
