Please answer if you offer pediatric ELNEC Training at your hospital

    • Is the ELNEC training offered housewide to staff? i.e. Hem/Onc/SCT, NICU, PICU, CICU? Yes, we offer the ELNEC-PPC training for all staff involved in the care of infants, children, or adolescents. (We are not an exclusively children’s hospital.)
    • Do all nurses in your peds Hem/Onc/SCT unit attend? Attendance has always been optional.
      • What about the ICUs? We have had a fair number of PICU and NICU nurses attend the ELNEC-PPC training, but it is not required.
    • Who are the trainers? (train the trainer)? I am the only person credentialed to teach ELNEC-PPC at my hospital but, consistent with the guidelines, I do solicit the support of other experienced staff to teach some of the modules under my direction/supervision/support. Ours is a training, not a train-the-trainer.
      • i.e. do you have Palliative Care APNs, RNs, Chaplains and educators/bedside nurses All sections are taught by nurses except Loss, Grief, and Bereavement, which one of our Child Life Specialists teaches.
    • How often do you run your program? I offer the course annually in November.
    • How long is your class for bedside RNs? The course is two full days with all 9 modules offered. We have had nurses, social workers, volunteers, and Child Life staff attend in the past. We offer CE.
    • How did you receive funding for the train the trainer costs and then end user training?  I have grant support from our hospital’s foundation. In-house attendees do not pay to attend. Outside course attendees pay $100.
    • Any other info? Logistics? We offered the course virtually for the first time last November and it went really well! It enabled individuals from a wider geographic area to attend. If anyone decides to go this route, I’m happy to offer tips. It involved a lot of planning for contingencies.
    • What is the feedback about the program in general? The feedback is always very positive. We try to keep the group sizes small (30 or fewer attendees) to allow for a more intimate experience, and we have a room with good acoustics and a cozy feel.
