We offer Hydroxyurea starting at 9 months of age so our patients are not put on birth control as most start it very young.  We educate regarding the risks of pregnancy and see our Hydroxyurea patients every 1-3 months depending on their dose and if any adjustments have been made.  With our routine labs, we also monitor HCG in our female patients who are child bearing age.

We do have some patients on birth control but mostly due to preference or if menses has been a trigger for VOC.

    Hello,

My other question related to hydroxyurea; are the patient put on birth control or educated regarding pregnancy?

Hi we have them sign a chemotherapy consent form, since it falls under the class of chemo drugs, and we want to make sure the potential side effects are discussed.

We do not have patients/parents sign a contract prior to initiation of Hydroxyurea. I am interested to know how this came up in your practice as I have never considered this.

    Hello all,

I was wondering if any facility had their patients sign a contract acknowledging risks associated with hydroxyurea before initiation of therapy? If so, what do you include?

    Many thanks,
