Air settings should be looked at and Alaris makes a product called an anti-siphon adapter (just ask your rep) that uses pressure to prevent the air bubbles.  Sometimes works and sometimes does not. We mostly have issues with cyclosporine and high dose etoposide.

We have had issues at times with TPN and cyclosporine. Sometimes cleaning the eye with alcohol helps and ensuring that the air valve is open. Some nurses say cleaning the section of the tubing that goes into the pump help. If it is really bothersome they will change the channel. For us it seems to depend on how bubbly the solution is before hanging. Nurses tend to be very diligent about letting the air dissipate before hanging TPN and cyclosporine because of the bubbles.

    Hello friends,

Just writing a quick discussion point to see if anyone using Alaris IV pumps has encountered issues with excessive air in line while running bicarbonate fluids. We just started using them a few weeks ago and have already had multiple problems. It’s possible our air settings are too small, but I wanted to see if there are fixes or if these issues are universal.

    Thanks!
