Our surgeons will usually ask us if we want accessed at insertion or not. If we do not have them access it, we usually try to wait 5-10 days to allow it to heal before accessing. Of note, we will often have to re apply a dressing from surgery if they leave it accessed so that we can visualize the site etc. Our most common practice is to tell them yes access it during insertion but they always verify it with us-including hemophiliacs getting port placed for factor infusions..

Our patients come back from surgery accessed. We had only one time that a patient was not accessed. We had a different surgeon doing the procedure
