Hi Erin, We use the initial discard for both lumens for our cultures, if it is an initial spike we do both aerobic and anaerobic from the first discard and half the discard for both bottles, and use the subsequent withdraw for other tests.

What is the policy in place at your facility for drawing blood cultures? Specifically, are you using initial waste (discard) as part of your blood culture sample or do you use the subsequent draw for the sample?
