May I ask what guidelines or data is used to do this PICC line flushing only once a week?

I’d love to hear what others are doing for hep locking lines eg. Port, CVL, PICC.  Have others moved away from using heparin to lock?

Hi, for PICC lines that are valved that is our usual procedure. They only need to be flushed once a week. We teach them to keep it dry during bathing and to inspect site every day for redness, swelling and to inspect the dressing to be sure it is still occlusive.

What is your practice for sending patients home with a PICC line for those who are not needing medications at home (newly diagnosed leukemia etc,)?  Do you teach them to flush the lines at home?  Lately, some of our physicians have sent the patient home with return to clinic appointment in a week with no flushing in between. Is anyone else doing this?

    Thanks in advance,
