We use our waste for cultures and we do not flush first.

See answers below, also would like to add two more questions on this subject to the group.

Do you use your waste for cultures from central lines?

    Do you flush first?

    Hi all,

Wondering what your practice is for drawing blood cultures.

    1. Do you draw just from CVAD, or both CVAD and peripheral?  CVAD only

    2. If you draw both what is the evidence supporting this practice?

    3. If you draw both, how often (percentage) does a peripheral culture come back positive when the CVAD culture result is negative?

    Thanks for your time!
