We only draw from the central line unless specifically ordered by the physician (which is incredibly rare).

    And the other questions:

We don’t use the waste for cultures and we flush just slightly to ensure patency of the line before pulling back the blood that is sitting in the line.

    Hi all,

Wondering what your practice is for drawing blood cultures.

    1. Do you draw just from CVAD, or both CVAD and peripheral?

    2. If you draw both what is the evidence supporting this practice?

    3. If you draw both, how often (percentage) does a peripheral culture come back positive when the CVAD culture result is negative?

    Thanks for your time!
