This question has recently come up at our institution as well and I look forward to other institution’s responses.  At this time, we traditionally draw only from our CVC in our hem/onc population.  Other specialties within pediatrics are beginning to look at drawing peripherals as well; however, hem/onc is continuing at this time with just CVC cultures until additional evidence is available.

Also, we too will use the waste for cultures since we take the first sample of blood as the culture sample from our lines.

    Hi all,

Wondering what your practice is for drawing blood cultures.

    1. Do you draw just from CVAD, or both CVAD and peripheral?

    2. If you draw both what is the evidence supporting this practice?

    3. If you draw both, how often (percentage) does a peripheral culture come back positive when the CVAD culture result is negative?

    Thanks for your time!
