    Hello

For a newly hired nurse, do you use a time-based orientation or a competency-based orientation? What is their typical length of orientation, in weeks?  We are a combined Hem/Onc/BMT unit and our typical orientation is 16 weeks.  This my be adjusted depending on our nurses orientation progress. We assess competencies throughout.

How many preceptors do they have? Whether our nurses are hired for days or nights, they spend time on both shifts, so our goal is one primary preceptor for each shift.

How do you track their progress through their orientation?   For example, we use a tiered checklist.

Our institution has a master skills checklist for evaluating nursing skills/knowledge.  Our preceptors/orientees also complete a bi-weekly orientation progress report with strengths/struggles/experiences and suggested goals for the next 2 weeks. As the educator, I meet with the preceptor and orientee at least every 4 weeks to review their progress, and more frequently as needed.
