    Our policy states that 10cc be wasted. 

    However, this is challenging for patients who are very small (less than 10 kg) or who have very frequent lab draws.

    In those cases, we will usually choose to obtain a physician’s order to waste 5-7cc instead.

    In the case of Jehovah’s Witness, we will follow our re-infusion policy whereby the sterile stopcock method is used and the wasted blood is reinfused into the patient following the lab draw.
