    At Phoenix Children’s Hospital we do use gastric pH and/or x-ray for placement verification;

    1. How does your institution verify and check NG tube placement? Initial placement x-ray, subsequent verification gastric pH
    2. Do you still do use the “swoosh” method or do you use pH testing? We discourage the swoosh method
    3. If you utilize pH testing for verifying placement, what product do you use? Do you perform quality control testing on pH strips? Do nurses have to complete a competency? We use pH strips and our Laboratory follows our control testing, RNs do receive annual competency check-offs.
    4. How are families taught to verify NG placement at home and if so what do you teach them (swoosh or pH)? We teach families to aspirate NG tube and use the pH strips at home and provide a home teaching handout for reference.

    I am following up on this question.  We do not use the PH testing for NG placement.  We just check for aspirate.  I would like to follow up and see what other institutions are currently doing to verify NG tube placement prior to feeds. I will ask the same questions that Mary Lynn Rae asked:

    1. How does your institution verify and check NG tube placement?
    2. Do you still do use the “swoosh” method or do you use pH testing?
    3. If you utilize pH testing for verifying placement, what product do you use? Do you perform quality control testing on pH strips? Do nurses have to complete a competency?
    4. How are families taught to verify NG placement at home and if so what do you teach them (swoosh or pH)?
