    Hi Kristen,

We use Beacon for any chemotherapy/biotherapy order set within Hem/Onc/Bmt. Most are developed from research protocols (COG, consortiums, and industry). Some are provider developed order-sets and not based on external protocols. Currently, we only use Beacon for oncology and BMT. There are a handful of hematology studies, such as gene therapy, that we used Beacon but it isn’t our common practice.

Other departments utilizing chemo infusions use standard order sets. We have a few hematology order-sets built in therapy plans, which are sort of similar to Beacon Treatment plans – but a different EPIC platform. The informatics nurses didn’t build those but did review and test them.

    Hello Mindy,
Do your informatics nurses build research and non-research protocols? Also, do you use Beacon for non-oncology infusions, and if so, do your oncology nurses support those departments?
    Thank you,
    Kristen

We have three nurses who function as Hem/Onc/BMT Nurse Infromaticists. Two are BSN prepared, former Infusion Nurses. The third is an APRN with clinical experience as a PNP within our leukemia/lymphoma team and formerly an infusion nurse. There primary roles include:
    – Building and validating BEACON treatment plans (EPIC Chemotherapy module)
    – Participating in protocol reviews prior to study launches
    – Evaluators for BEACON order templates developed from protocols
    – Acting as a liaison between clinical Hem/Onc/BMT teams and the hospital IS department
    – Resource for clinical providers and nurses in entering and implementing orders
    – Member of reviewing team for any event report or near miss that is associated with chemotherapy protocols
    – Member of reviewing body for department specific Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs)
Each of them underwent a lengthy orientation, including training at EPIC in inpatient EPIC, ambulatory EPIC, and BEACON.

Happy to chat if you would like more information.

    Hello All,

I am reaching out to see if your program has a dedicated HemOnc Informatics Nurse. If such as role exists in your programs, would you mind sending me a list of their key tasks or ways they support your program?

    Thanks

    Kathleen
