About 7 years ago we finally drew a line in the sand on this. We decided to make the certification required for all outpatient RN’s. The nurses had two years to obtain certification. For all new hires, they have the same requirement, certification within two years.
We currently have only 5 nurses who are not certified, but they will be certified prior to the two year mark.
We fortunately have not had anyone fail the exam. I think that it has been because we tak the time to prepare them well. They attend morning huddles (which often include treatment rationale), tumor boardd and a review course. We also encourage small study groups and our CNS prepares study questions each week.
Our next hurdle is our APRN’s. They have not been encouraged to certify OR attend chemo/bio. Has anyone else addressed this with their mid-level providers?

At Cincinnati, we have 29 percent of our clinic RN’s have a certification. We have been offering review course to them to help as an incentive. (18 of 63 nurses)

Hi, We are trying to get some benchmarking information on CPON/CPHON/BMT-CN certification from other outpatient units across the country. What percentage of your staff nurses are certified? We have 25 staff nurses, 7 are certified. we are trying to increase that number and want to know how other places are doing in this endeavor! Thanks!
