Course Overview: This course explores the critical role of chronic transfusion therapy in preventing strokes in children with sickle cell anemia. Participants will gain a comprehensive understanding of the therapy’s importance, identify common barriers and facilitators, and learn strategies to enhance its implementation. The course will cover logistical challenges, negative interactions with staff, and the significance of access to blood and nursing support. By the end of the course, learners will be equipped with the knowledge to improve the transfusion experience for patients through positive child/family interactions and effective coordination with blood banks.  

Learning Outcomes:  

  • Understand the role of chronic transfusion therapy for stroke prevention in children with sickle cell anemia  
  • Identify barriers and facilitators to chronic transfusion therapy for stroke prevention for children with sickle cell anemia  
  • Identify strategies for reducing barriers or adopting facilitators to improve chronic transfusion therapy for children with sickle cell anemia
