Author(s): Louisa Rygh, BA, Sonal Johal, MS, Hana Johnson, BS, and Cynthia W. Karlson, PhD
Course Overview: This course presents a pilot study on the effectiveness of virtual reality interventions for children undergoing port-a-cath access procedures in pediatric oncology. It outlines learning outcomes, including the impact of virtual reality on children’s distress, assessment tools for adverse events, and barriers to adoption. The study utilized a mixed-method pre-test/post-test design to evaluate efficacy and workflow impact, while also detailing patient exclusions, pre-intervention assessments, and the usage of various questionnaires to measure symptoms and usability. The findings suggest significant reductions in pain and fear among younger children when using virtual reality interventions during procedures.
Learning Outcomes:
- Describe the impact of virtual reality interventions on children undergoing port-a-cath access procedures.
- Describe assessment tools used to assess distressing adverse events experienced while using virtual reality interventions.
- List barriers associated with the adoption of a virtual reality intervention.
