Local Chapter Annual Incentive Contest
The local chapter incentive contest encourages local chapters to focus on achieving goals in a designated area each year. Every chapter is eligible and is encouraged to participate in the incentive contest. Read on to see how to build up points through celebrating Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day.
Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day
What Is It?
Established in 2010 by the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON), Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day is celebrated each year on September 8. The local chapter incentive contest will focus on celebrating the wonderful work that you do! We encourage APHON local chapters to celebrate Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day with their chapter and the hospitals that support their local chapter.
Ways to Participate
Chapters that celebrate Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day will earn points for various activities. Below are different ways to celebrate, and the point level for each. The list includes large and small ways to celebrate and recognize the amazing nurses in our specialty.
Get Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day Recognized at the state level.
Get this day recognized in your state by submitting a proclamation request.
Local Media Recognition
Have Pediatric Nurses’ Day recognized in media outlets to receive points.

Photo Submissions
Share any photos with captions about how your chapter celebrated the day and earn 80 points for each photo submitted (up to 25 photos will earn points).
Have the Day Recognized at Your Hospital
Promote Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day within the institution that supports your chapter.
- Ice cream socials or another special treat giveaway.
- Intranet posting recognizing the day.
- Display posters within the hospital(s) that support your chapter.
- Place celebratory balloons in the nursing break rooms.
Organize or sponsor a self-care activity for pediatric hematology/oncology nurses
Internal Recognition
Establish an internal way to recognize pediatric hematology/oncology nurses in institutions that support your chapter.
- Distribute Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses’ Day pins or wear them if you already own one.
- Issue certificates of appreciation.
- Social media posts recognizing a nurse of the day, week, or month.
- Send an internal e-mail recognizing a nurse of the day, week, or month.
Thank You Program
Create a thank you program for nurses and patients to thank/recognize individual nurses.

Submit Your Chapter Application
The receiving chapter receives a $500 honorarium, recognition on the APHON website, and a press release.
Completed applications are due September 27.
