Spring Education Exchange (SEE): Day 1, Session 3
Presented By: Belinda N Mandrell PhD, RN, PNP-AC, FAAN, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Session Details: Day 1: May 14, Session 3: 2:00 PM EST (1:00 PM CST/12:00 PM MST/11:00 AM PST)
Overview of Session: The session presented by Dr. Belinda N Mandrell focused on developing a photobiomodulation (PBM) program to prevent and treat oral mucositis in pediatric oncology patients. The program was initiated following a clinical trial that demonstrated PBM’s efficacy, leading to its inclusion in supportive care guidelines. A dedicated PBM therapy team was formed, enhancing patient referral rates, with 324 patients treated since 2021. The program received institutional recognition for its clinical care improvement, emphasizing the importance of PBM in managing oral mucositis among high-risk pediatric patients.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the efficacy of PBM – Learn how photobiomodulation (PBM) effectively prevents and reduces oral mucositis in children undergoing hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT).
- Recognize key components of PBM program implementation – Identify the essential elements of establishing a PBM program, including staff training, protocol development, and patient care integration.
- Assess the impact of PBM in clinical practice – Evaluate the program’s success through patient outcomes, expansion to high-risk groups, and recognition with a Clinical Care Improvement Award.
