Overview of the Session: This session will explore anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening complication of treatment for cancer and other disorders. Presentation and manifestations can vary by systems involved and severity. We will discuss the pathophysiology of anaphylaxis and emergency management of this often rapidly progressing complication. We will address the differences and similarities between infusion reactions, cytokine release syndrome, and anaphylaxis, and how to recognize these reactions. We will explore titer monitoring and desensitization protocols for asparaginase and further nursing implications for administering high risk medications.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the immune response that leads to anaphylaxis.
- Understand common triggers of anaphylaxis in the Hematology/ Oncology population.
- Understand the role of Hematology/ Oncology nurses in the responses and treatment of anaphylaxis.
